Bio Instrumentation Engineer For Hardware, Software, and Computational Biology
About the Company
Ovelle is revolutionizing fertility treatment through human in vitro oogenesis—producing eggs from somatic cells. We have developed technology to create the cell types of the ovary from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by manipulating expression of transcription factors and RNA-binding proteins. Notably, we are the first company to produce meiotic oogonia-like cells from human iPSCs. This is an important step towards in vitro oogenesis because activating meiosis has been a key challenge in the field. We will incorporate these meiotic oogonia-like cells into ovarian organoids to create synthetic ovaries capable of producing eggs. By innovating egg production, we aim to make fertility treatments more accessible and affordable. If we are successful, it will mark a paradigm shift in treatments for infertility, and offer a new path to parenthood for millions of people around the world. Come help us build an exciting future all of us want to live in.
About the Specific Role
We seek a Bio Instrumentation Engineer to build the custom hardware, software, and computational pipelines that will accelerate our path to in vitro oogenesis. This role sits at the intersection of microfluidics, microscopy, lab automation, and computational biology. You will design devices to culture, and image our cells and organoids; develop the quantitative image analysis and bioinformatics pipelines that turn raw data into insight; and help us with lab automations. This is an opportunity for an elite hardware hacker who is equally at home developing devices as they are writing code to analyze single-cell sequencing data.
How You Will Contribute
- Design, fabricate, and characterize custom devices for culturing, and imaging cells, organoids, and other biological samples
- Build and optimize custom imaging setups and protocols—confocal, fluorescence, and live-cell—and integrate them with automated stages, pressure sources, liquid handling, and environmental controls
- Develop quantitative image analysis pipelines for extracting features such as nuclear localization, protein gradients, morphology, and division dynamics from confocal and fluorescent microscopy datasets
- Analyze single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and DNA methylation datasets to characterize cell identity, lineage trajectories, and epigenetic state across our iPSC-derived cell types
- Build software and firmware that glue hardware together—interfacing microscopes, liquid handlers, incubators, microcontrollers, and custom-built rigs—to automate repetitive or high-throughput wet-lab workflows
- Partner closely with wet-lab biologists to translate experimental needs into instrumentation and analysis tools, and ship production-ready, reproducible pipelines
- Document, version, and share devices, schematics, firmware, and code with the rest of the team
Qualifications
- Strong fluency with confocal and fluorescence microscopy, and with quantitative image analysis
- Proficiency in bioinformatics analysis of single-cell data, including scRNA-seq and DNA methylation data
- A track record of building or hacking lab hardware—microcontrollers, 3D printing, CAD, motion control, pneumatic or pressure systems, sensor integration, or similar—to automate experimental workflows
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design, debug, and iterate on complex multi-step hardware–software–wet-lab systems
- No specific degree required. We care about what you can build and what you know: if you’re genuinely excellent at this work, we want to talk to you
